Looks like you don’t need an Apple TV anymore to get your YouTube fix in a nice interface on your TV. Courtesy of CNET…
“By visiting www.youtube.com/tv in your Opera or PS3 browser [ED: doesn't work in PC browsers], you get a new layout that lets you browse and search through videos…”
I’ll be trying this out on both my PS3 and my Wii this weekend and will let you know my thoughts – and let us know how it works for you in the Comments!
Hey there. I am a little perturbed that the youtube channel did not make it to the 360. Do you think they will get there? I know that firefox has a plugin called IE tab, so i looked for an Opera Tab and found this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1190
For some reason it does not seem to work for me. I downloaded Opera and tried it that way. The website opens but I have a feeling it is not working like it should. I wonder if there is a Wii or PS3 emulator that would allow the link to work on a PC?
just played with it on my PS3 – works great.. Very well designed for the couchpotato 10-feet-away controller interface..
Jeff: be sure to edit the URL for the YouTube link. The one you’ve posted actually goes to a specific user’s page (by the name of ‘TV’). You must link to the lowercase ‘tv’ as below:
http://www.youtube.com/tv/
It looks like CNET got this wrong as well. I tried it out (very shortly) on my PS3 and I see a lot of potential here, particularly if Google get’s the longer form Google Videos integrated into this.
Keep up the good work here. I’ll be watching this evolution very closely.
Neondog: Yeah, I was kind of surprised about this too BUT I think it’s because Microsoft has been fairly insistent on keeping the browsing capabilities of the 360 limited to (I think) encourage people to set up the 360 with their Media Center products instead. From what I’ve heard, the website URL I posted will only work from a PS3 or similar device – otherwise it just forwards to the normal site.
anony: Great – good to hear it’s working for others. Now how will you use it?
Ross O: Thanks for the tip, Ross – I changed the URL!
Jeff
you really need to talk about
http://themediamall.com/
they have the best software to view video content over the web on your TV set.
It only works in the USA but they can add more content from Canada also.
YouTube works well on a Wii, though it gets a little wonky with longer items, like authors@google. They work, but you do have to be a little patient. I sure do wish Nintendo and Adobe would upgrade the Flash player, though.
sidelobe: Yeah, not sure what’s keeping them with that old Flash player. Really, it’s kept me from exploring these options on my Wii.
As Jay mentions above, there is a cool app (that I haven’t used yet) at http://themediamall.com/playon/ that…
“If you have a PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox 360, or HP MediaSmart TV, PlayOn lets you watch Netflix, Hulu, CBS, YouTube, CNN, ESPN and more on your TV. Check it out with a 14 day free trial. We will also be adding support for Nintendo Wii in early 2009. Stay tuned!”
