commandN 163 – techTIPS: Surfing on your TV

The first decabled commandN segment was released yesterday on our new commandN.tv site and we thought we should also include it here (my decabled techTIPS is the middle segment). See the commandN.tv page for this ep for links.

I’ve definitely for an alternative solution.

Cable is expensive. I have yet to subscribe to cable though I may have to if my digital converter box can’t pick up any channels (I’m still on analog TV) since rabbit ear reception in SF is horrible (at least where I live) when things cut over in a few weeks.

I mostly watch broadcast TV, and cable shows such as Dexter, the Wire, Saving Grace or Deadwood on DVD via my netflix account or loans from the public library.

Marina: Would love to know what happens to your signal when things cut over. Public library is a good angle too. I’m curious to see what the real costs are going through some pay services too – certainly will be doing some calculations with iTunes numbers in a future post (might be a good poll thing).

    Thanks for commenting,

    Jeff

About two and a half years ago, my wife and I cut our cable. We get all of our entertainment either through podcasts, iTunes,or on DVD.

It’s been easy enough and we really enjoy what we’re getting online (legitimately). Make it easy and we’re there. ;-)

I use a program called “PLAYON” to bring HULU, Netlfix, CBS, ESPN, YOUTUBE to my XBOX360 and PS3. They will be supporting the Wii very soon.

What the program does it connects to HULU or Netflix encodes FLASH to MPEG2 on the fly so it can stream to XBOX360 or PS3.

PlayOn enables consumers who own a PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox 360, or HP MediaSmart TV to access content from sites including Netflix, Hulu, CBS, YouTube, ESPN and more on their television. We have been testing PlayOn Beta for a number of months now, and the fully featured release will be coming shortly!

We will also be adding support for Nintendo Wii in early 2009. Stay tuned!

http://www.joost.com/ has shows from CBS and CW that you can watch for free. Joost is a lot like HULU.

All the networks now have TV shows that you can watch on their web site. But a lot of them have bad flash players.

FOX you have to get out of full screen just to pause seems really weird since they also post their shows on HULU.com. Also on FOX and ABC you have to install a plugin from their website to get the shows to play.

By forcing you to install plugin from their website it makes it a lot harder for programs like PLAYON and BOXEE to stream those shows.

I know a lot of people from Canada and Europe hate HULU because that webite does not work in the countries they live in. That is because different companies have the distribution rights to those shows.

In Canada CityTV any show they have it is up to them to distribute those shows in that country.

    Do not believe me?
